DIALOGUE IN ACTION

A mainstay of PCP's work is designing and facilitating conversations on divisive issues. PCP's range of experience is broad, and includes such controversial areas as abortion, post-civil war, the environment, population and development, sexual orientation and religion, and economic difference. Participants have included leading advocates on opposing sides of public issues, employees of private and public-sector organizations, members of networks who want to improve their collaboration, and concerned citizens. While enhancing their ability to communicate and understand one another, participants also improve their relationships. They often realize they can work together toward shared goals without compromising their deeply held values, beliefs, or positions. A good dialogue offers those who participate a chance to:
  • listen and be listened to so that everyone can be heard.
  • speak and be spoken to in a respectful manner.
  • develop or deepen mutual understanding and discover common concerns.
  • learn about perspectives that others hold while reflecting on one's own views.
